History of the Peace Corps in Guinea

The following is taken directly from Peace Corps Wiki / Guinea:

"Peace Corps signed a cooperation agreement with the government of Guinea in 1962, which forms the basis for our current country program. The first Volunteers arrived in Guinea in 1963. However, in 1966, relations between the United States government and the government of Guinea soured, and the Guinean government asked Volunteers to leave. Peace Corps was invited back in 1969, but again relations between the two governments deteriorated, and Volunteers left in 1971. Soon after President Sekou Touré’s death in 1984, Peace Corps was asked to return once again to Guinea."

Humor from Peace Corps Guinea

Peace Corps volunteers do serious work, but that doesn't mean they're always straight-faced and scowling. Read about that unique, fanciful, and sometimes depraved sense of humor that comes to Guinea Peace Corps Volunteers.

Who is going to Guinea (and can carry courier)?

Brian Farenell maintains a list of people who are going to Guinea and are offering to carry courier. It can be found at:

http://calendar.yahoo.com/goingtoguinea

If you are going to Guinea and are willing to carry courier, please contact Brian Farenell at saabrian @ yahoo.com. Please indicate the following:

  • The latest date by which you need to receive the courier (suggested: a few days before the actual departure date)
  • What type of courier you are willing to carry (letters, small packets, larger packets, boxes, etc.)
  • Where you are going in the country. Unless otherwise stated, it is assumed you are willing to carry courier to drop off at the volunteer house in Conakry. If you are willing to carry mail to other places or if you are going to be dropping mail off somewhere other the Conakry house, please state specific details to that effect.

As a matter of policy, Brian does not publish any postal addresses or phone numbers.
Exception: If you do not want your email address published, please make it clear in your correspondence, and he will publish your postal address or phone number as per your wish.
